Light Bulb image transfer and computer manipulation
|
|
The Vietnam shot was taken in Hoa Lu, 2 hours south of Hanoi City. I shot
the light bulb with a Pentax 6X7 on Polaroid 669 film.
I then peeled the Polaroid apart after about 40 seconds. I then immediately
placed the negative part of the Polaroid on a flatbed scanner, scanned it in
and then manipulated the image in PhotoShop. It took about 15 shots of the
bulb before I got an image that I wanted to work with.

Havana SX-70 manipulation
|
|
Usually when you
do an SX-70 manipulation (especially of a moving subject) you only get one
try at it. Because I've adapted my 4X5 camera to take an SX-70 back I can
shoot the original on 35mm slide film and then try as many manipulations as
I want, until I'm satisfied with the results. The shot of old American car in Havana
took about 5 tries till I was satisfied.

Lips SX-70 manipulation

Earth emulsion transfer
|
|
The lips image was combined from two separate images with
computer manipulation. The earth picture was originally a photo of
a globe on Provia. I then shot it onto Polaroid 669 and submerged
the fully developed print in hot water for 5
minutes. I then lifted the emulsion off onto Arches watercolor paper and
manipulated it with my fingers.

All my Polaroid manipulations are first shot on 35mm film, usually either
Fuji Provia or Velvia. Then I take the slides and dupe them onto Polaroid
film using a Beseler Slide duper, a 4X5 camera and various backs. For the
transfer and emulsion lifts I use Polaroid 669 film. For the SX-70's, I
custom built my own SX-70 back to fit on the 4X5 camera. I shoot most of my
images for my stock agent Tony Stone Images.
